In our opinion...

A quick glance at the What’s Inside contents page of this hefty weekend supplement, and anyone with a lively mind and varied interests is instantly encouraged to read on. From glossy cover to cover the Guardian Weekend magazine is an entertaining, jam-packed read that surprises at every turn. Originally thought of as the magazine for ‘trendy liberals’, its sheer diversity and attractive presentation now beckons a far wider readership.

As with most supplements, the content is neatly segmented, opening with - very appropriately! - a section entitled Starters. Here you’ll find the lively and humorous observations of several regular, entertaining columnists, a Q&A interview with a newly acclaimed author or artist, a real-life reader experience article, and unusually for a supplement a Readers’ Letters page. The Features section comes next, and can occupy up to an impressive 50 pages. There’s nothing run-of-the-mill about the subject matter, and the only consistency is in the sheer standard and style of writing. Originally sourced in-depth interviews with celebrities of superstar status (think Tom Jones for example) sit comfortably alongside extraordinary and emotional news stories, extracts from major new books, and profiles of up-and-coming actors. There’s a well-honed and ethical writing style – funny without being irreverent, serious without being sombre – and the features are weighty and informative. For a change of tempo, the reader can turn to the final Weekending section for a leisurely stroll through pages of attractively presented lifestyle topics, starting with classy high street and designer fashion ideas for both sexes. Move on to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s inimitable take on food, contributions from other cookery writers, wine articles, a restaurant review, medical topics, relationship matters, home style tips, a UK town review, practical gardening advice, motoring ……..the list is endless and guarantees that the magazine will be picked up time and again for a further delve into its treasure trove of contents.

This publication is an original and engrossing read nicely complemented by reader participation opportunities via the Letters page, real-life articles, home and gardening questions, and a creative photography competition.
