The Independent’s cover is a matt, no-nonsense affair, a little unusual when many supplements these days have gone down the high-gloss route. Staying true to the values of its newspaper however, the magazine targets an intelligent and serious readership that doesn’t judge a book by its cover and knows that inside this low-profile exterior beats a throbbing read!

The magazine is split into distinct sections, making it easy for readers to go straight to their preferred areas of interest if time is short. Opening with an interesting Upfront section, there are humorous photographic snips of the week’s news, together with a celebrity My Secret Life interview and other varied contributions. The next section focuses on current affairs, takes a look at the latest art and photographic exhibitions, and makes a big splash when the new fashion collections are on the catwalks. Cutting-edge fashion articles and interviews with pioneering designers take centre stage and are translated into clever high street fashion buys, which feature alongside style and grooming tips for both sexes. The meaty Life & Style section offers a great mix of content including articles on food and wine, with recipe contributions from renowned chef Mark Hix and a weekly restaurant review. Always a popular read, this is followed by a design and interiors spread which provides the opportunity to pick up house style ideas and tips. The gardening pages are different, offering not just the normal plant and seasonal reviews, but wandering the gardens of the world with Anna Pavord for a real horticultural treat. Extras including a motoring test drive, pets’ corner, and an absolute myriad of challenging puzzles and games to complete the package.

There’s lots of reading in this publication, and it’s definitely one that will be picked up repeatedly throughout the weekend and beyond, with lots more to it than initially meets the eye.
