With a larger page size than many of the weekend supplements, The New Review magazine has the same low-key matt presentation as its Saturday counterpart, and offers another seriously good Independent-style read. It’s targeted at young professionals and other educated readers who appreciate its diversity of content, strong reporting and depth of research and writing.
With an emphasis very much on culture and the arts, the publication is nevertheless a ‘complete package’ and includes an enjoyable and well-compiled Living section which combines an attractive mix of articles on food (usually seasonal recipes with a twist), wine and restaurants with hot fashion tips and stylish new buys for the home. Gardeners aren’t overlooked either, and to keep the brain cells ticking over there’s also a great little Diversions section with crosswords and puzzles. Add to this a celebrity interview, Sunday television listings and TV recommendations for the rest of the week, and even a social ‘Agony Aunt’ and the magazine becomes almost a 2-in-1 publication. The lighter ‘Part 2’ described above supports an incredible wealth of strongly written current affairs features and articles, provocative interviews with sometimes controversial and pioneering doyens of the arts world, in-depth profiles of often overlooked fringe performers and lesser-known or avant-garde artists, and usually an absorbing and unique cover story. Alongside these gems is a comprehensive book review for serious readers with interests in social history, world affairs and artistic pursuits, and a lighter and briefer review of some of the latest paperbacks.
Throw in the few extra columns and snippets on celebrities, recent parties and fashion to be found in the opening pages and this magazine offers the nicely-rounded mix demanded by its Sunday readership.
